Fig. 10 Filter Tube Cap Removal. 01M Transaxle:
Use only ATF VW G 052 162 A2 or equivalent for topping up or replacing fluid.
1. Raise and support vehicle.
2. Connect a suitable scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC), found under left side of dash panel, to right of steering column.
3. Follow scan tool manufacturer's instructions to access "Transaxle Electronics, then advance to transaxle oil temperature measurement.
4. Transaxle oil cannot be above 30° C to begin oil level test.
5. Remove ATF level plug from oil pan, Fig. 9 discarding seal, a small amount of fluid in tube should run out.
6. Run vehicle until transaxle temperature reaches 35-45°C, ATF should drip out of level overflow tube.
7. If fluid drips out replace level plug with new gasket and tighten to specification, level check is complete.
8. If Fluid does not drip out proceed as follows:
a. Pry securing cap off filler tube plug Fig. 10 discard securing cap. (Note on some models a reusable securing cap with spring clip was used.)
b. Remove filler tube plug, fill transaxle with suitable ATF until fluid runs out of level plug hole.
c. Install level tube plug using a new gasket.
d. Install filler plug, then filler plug securing cap.
