1. After an accident resulting in SRS deployment, the following procedure must be adhered to:
- Notify your Area Office prior to starting any repair. The FTS/RMPS will document the damages and carry out a survey of the accident.
- If parts are being purchased by an independent body shop, please advise the body shop about the complexity and sensitivity of the SRS-system. Also, advise the body shop to bring the car to a Volvo dealer for appropriate repair of the SRS-system which is a safety system. The reason for this is to make sure that the SRS-system will perform as expected after the repair, and to help avoid complicated liability situations.
- In order to retain the vehicle's safety performance criteria, the SRS components listed below must be replaced, and all replaced components scrapped after a bag deployment:
Component Replacement Criteria
* Bag Assembly cannot be reused
* Contact Reel cannot be reused due to connector damage caused by heat
* Steering Wheel cannot be reused due to deformations and/or decreased strength properties
* Seatbelt pre-tensioners Both seatbelt tensioners, including belts, 780 only must be replaced on every occasion following
a collision involving SRS deployment, (even if the passenger seat has been unoccupied)
Component Replacement Criteria
*Front Seatbelts 240,
740, 760 Must be replaced in all occupied seats
Rear Seatbelts, 240, where the belt has been used
740,760,780
*Crash sensor Must be replaced when mechanical
damage to brackets, wiring harness, etc. has occurred.
*Crash sensor Must be replaced when deformation of
floor/cross members around the sensor is evident.
2. If the crash sensor has not been exposed to the adverse conditions listed in item # 1, it may be reused following an accident resulting in SRS deployment, except in the following cases:
a) The crash sensor cannot be reset when new parts have been installed.
b) Other faults in the SRS System:
If the SRS Warning Light is on -
Read out the fault code (following procedures in SRS Service Manuals)
- If the code is 1 or combinations with 1, replace the crash sensor.
Note: Do not reset the crash sensor, in these cases involving fault code 1.
- If you cannot read out a code and/or the light stays on, replace the crash sensor.
- If you receive any other codes, follow the fault tracing procedures in the SRS Service Manual.
3. The crash-sensor should be replaced if the car has been flooded and the sensor has been soaked in water.
PARTS ORDER PROCEDURE
The bag assembly requires special order handling. The parts order for these components must be placed by phone with Dealer Services in Rockleigh or the Toronto Distribution Center. Refer to page 4 of this bulletin for the information that must be provided to Dealer Services when placing a Parts Order.
- All air bags (not deployed) and crash sensors which exhibit a fault code must be returned for warranty consideration to VCNA Parts Testing, Rockleigh, New Jersey.
Warranty Claim Submission
The crash sensor claim must contain the following information:
- Vehicle identification Number (VIN)
- Serial number of old sensor
- Serial number new sensor
- Fault code and reason for replacement.
This information is necessary to maintain an accurate vehicle file and assist in Technical Material Analysis.
