Timing Cover: Service and Repair
B280F ENGINES
1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Remove cap on coolant expansion tank and engine splashguard, then disconnect vacuum hose from heating system water valve and lower coolant hose from radiator and drain coolant.
3. Disconnect oil cooler lines from radiator, electrical connectors from thermoswitch in radiator, hoses from radiator to expansion tank, upper and lower hoses from water pump, then remove radiator and fan shroud.
4. Remove cooling fan, then the clamp securing harness to timing cover.
5. Loosen alternator drive belt, then remove water pump pulley.
6. Remove protective cover, distributor cap, rotor, camshaft center bolt, rotor holder, dust cover, O-ring and distributor housing.
7. Remove air intake hose, harness clamp from left valve cover, ignition cables and fuel pipes from bracket on left valve cover, then the left valve cover.
8. Remove oil filler cap with hoses and EGR valve with pipes and vacuum hose, then disconnect A/C compressor and set aside complete with bracket and belt tensioner.
9. Remove pulley for A/C belt, dipstick on valve cover, clamp around harness, then the right valve cover.
10. Remove servo pump drive belt, servo pump and set aside, then the bracket.
11. Position No. 1 cylinder at TDC compression stroke. Marking 1 on belt pulley should be opposite 0 mark on ignition setting plate and both cylinder No. 1 rockers should be loose.
12. Remove cover plate on left side of flywheel, then insert locking gear segment 5112 at upper bolt to hold flywheel in place.
13. Remove crankshaft pulley, locking gear segment, then the timing cover. Set distributor shaft extension in a safe place.
14. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Use sealing compound 1 161 056-6 on four lower timing cover bolts.
b. Use sealing compound 1 161 026-8 in several places to fasten valve cover gaskets.
c. In order to ensure that T shaped joints between cylinder block, valve covers and timing cover are completely sealed, a piece of silicone sealant 1 161 048-2 can be placed in them. Do not use excess sealant, or sealant may enter lubrication system and plug oil galleys.
d. Tighten all fasteners to specifications.
e. Bleed cooling system, then check and, if necessary, adjust idle speed and CO content.
